“A quality workspace design leads to a less stressful and more productive atmosphere. It’s essential that employers take the physical work environment of their employees into consideration. Employees need to feel comfortable and calm in their physical work settings to produce their best work.” - Alan Kohll
No, we don’t mean the TV show. Though it is pretty good too. For a company that so often boasts the benefits of working remotely, you may be surprised to hear that we do in fact have a head office in the beautiful City of York. So, why do we have an office space when so many of our team members work remotely? Since Tell’s conception, we have found it useful to have a base that we use extremely flexibly. Our team members have the option to visit the office if and when they feel they need to, meaning they get the best of both in-office and home-based working. You may recall our blog from a couple weeks ago where we listed the main reasons we love remote working. Well, in a bid to be fair, and in the wake of an upgrade of our office space, we’ve decided to write a companion piece. In this blog we discuss what we love about having the option to work from the office.
Working from home is undoubtedly a luxury, but perhaps it is one that we begin to take for granted after a while. The importance of your work environment is not something to take lightly. It’s for that reason that in our blog about work from home routines we suggested switching it up. Slowly, the comfort of a home office may become a little samey and stifling. It’s at this point that we invite our team members to jump on a train and join us in the office. Sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what you need to reignite your passion for a project. Our events operator Alex said he loves travelling into the office physically every now and then. He finds it reassuring to see the place he works for remotely with his own eyes. We pride ourselves on being able to give our team the best of both worlds when it comes to working in-office and working from home.
When working from home we make sure that our staff has access to all of our professional-grade equipment. No matter where you are working from, none of our staff are without the equipment they need to do an incredible job. However, our office itself is decked out with all of our gear as a purpose-built work facility. As opposed to the conventional office, ours operates as a virtual event production space. Additionally, with desks, comfy chairs, whiteboards and the like, our office is the perfect work environment. Harking back to my own university days, there was always something about the study rooms and library that incited and motivated work from me that my flat just never could. Offering our team this space which is solely intended for productive work gives them that little extra push to get it done. Kat acknowledges that there's benefits to both home and office working, that’s why she schedules time for both! Additionally, it promotes a healthy work-life balance and keeps her in a positive mindset.
Another great aspect of having a communal workspace is the rapport that you build with your team members in the office. Alex expressed that he really values the ‘vibe of in person collaboration’. The buzz of an office, while the whole team is working towards a shared goal, is almost tangible. Our producer, Kat Chacon, echoes this sentiment saying she enjoys “bouncing ideas and questions with other people in the room”. As Ken Blanchard said, "none of us is as smart as all of us".
Lucky for us, we’ve just upgraded our space! In the past month we have relocated offices. Granted, we are only a two minute walk down the hall from our original office space, but, trust me when I say this was a great decision for the company. Our new space is bigger and better than the previous and it's kitted out with all the best equipment. It helps that it looks pretty good too!
